The supposedly possessed this time is sixteen year old home schooled Nell Sweetzer, the request coming from her devout farmer father, two-year widowed Louis Sweetzer, and apparently, as Cotton will discover, against the wishes of Nell's older brother, Caleb Sweetzer.
Louis' devotion to his faith is despite he and his local preacher, Pastor Joseph Manley, having had a falling out over Nell, the Sweetzers who have not attended church now in two years.
Cotton will discover that Nell is different than any of the other "possessed" before her that he's seen, and that he, and by association anyone else dealing with this case, including the documentary crew, may be over their heads and in possible danger, that is unless Cotton truly has the faith and the power he purports to his followers.
Sign In. Edit The Last Exorcism Jump to: Summaries 4 Synopsis 1. The synopsis below may give away important plot points. We couldn't use special effects for the possession scenes - we couldn't have her head spin off. So that was the question that would keep the audience involved. I like that the ending is controversial. If we're telling a story about a minister who has lost his faith, and at the last minute he has a demon in front of him, is that too late for him to regain faith?
That's not faith anymore if you see [a demon]. The question to me is whether God will help him. Or will he say, "That's a little late to call for my help. We also left open what's happening with Nell.
People found the ending too abrupt, but you can't tie the story up neatly if your photographer is killed. If you and I walked into a devil worshiper mass, we wouldn't know what was going on.
We wouldn't understand where to point the camera, and who the big boss is. We would never understand it. That to me is the meaning of the ending.
I don't want to solve the ambiguity. But if you watch the movie carefully, a lot is explained when Nell is asked about Caleb — she says he was so destroyed by his mother's death that he started hating God. So that's why Caleb joined the cult. Was she also part of the cult, or was she a victim that her brother used to implant the demon spawn? We don't know.
The conversation turned back to the meaning of faith. It's revealed that the leader of this occult group and the man who impregnated Nell is, you guessed it, the local town pastor. The newborn creature is thrown screaming into the fire, which blazes into a huge fireball when this happens - Cotton, seeing all this, seems to try with all his might to regain his faith in God, raises a cross and heads towards the melee.
The cameraman and the woman doing the interviewing for the documentary run off terrified into the woods - she is struck down and presumably killed and the cameraman keeps running.
Eventually he is cut off by Nell's brother who decapitates the cameraman, the camera falls to the ground, and the screen goes black. Vic Holtreman founded the popular movie news site ScreenRant. I left a satisfied customer.
Or maybe they were let down by the fact that The Last Exorcism was short on traditional horror-movie thrills — hardly anything jumped out to scare you, save for that Going the Distance trailer. How did your theater react? And am I wrong for actually enjoying this movie?
